Beauty of the Northern Lights
While the display that I described on page 2 was not the strongest, or most colorful display that I have ever seen, it was one of the most memorable.
That's the beauty of the northern lights – the subtle displays can be as breathtaking as the strong displays.
I can almost imagine the thoughts that went through the minds of the Lewis and Clark party when they saw the northern lights on November 6, 1804, while camping for the winter at Fort Mandan. While my experience with the northern lights is minimal – it is growing.
I rarely saw the northern lights growing up or even in my adult years. It wasn't until the year 2000 that I started to actively "chase" the northern lights.
The first major display that I saw in recent years occurred on the evening of May 24, 2002.
My reaction – "wow!"
I have actively pursued the northern lights since then, and have viewed and photographed many displays.
This hobby has been very rewarding as I continue to chase what I call the "greatest show on earth." Next - Science of the Northern Lights
