The Northern Lights

April 17, 2001
All photographs taken on April 17, 2001, between 10:30 & 11:45 p.m.

I saw the northern lights only a couple of times in my years of growing up on the farm.  However, the northern lights captured my interest right away as I have always had a desire to see them again (and again and again and again).  In recent years, the internet (specifically daily forecasts) has made it possible for me to know when the northern lights might be seen in the middle latitudes.  As a result, I typically drive to the farm when forecasts indicate that a good display might be seen in North Dakota.  That persistence has been well worth it.  Viewing the northern lights from the prairie (sometimes during some very cold weather), and the surprise of never knowing how the photographs will ultimately look, make it an exciting venture.
